April 2010

Looking to become more active as a family? Here's how to start...

Children should get at least one hour or more of physical activity every day.

Start by making small changes.

  • Make physical activity part of your daily routine.
  • Limit recreational TV and computer time, and keep them out of the bedroom.
  • Choose toys and games that promote physical activity.
  • Encourage activities that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.

And remember, keep physical activity fun! Be a role model!

Here are some ideas, by age, to get you and your family moving TOGETHER!

New Grant Awards

Let's Go! is pleased to announce that the Maine Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics has been awarded one of four National Healthy Active Living Grants. The funds awarded will be used to focus on healthy nutrition during home visitation of children aged 0-5 years, with particular emphasis on drinking more milk and water and less juice. With these funds, we will be piloting a new tool between July 2010 - July 2011 through Youth Alternatives Ingraham, Healthy Families Program, which serves 197 families in Cumberland County.

Let's Go! is also happy to be partnering with Healthy Portland at the City of Portland on their recent Communities Putting Prevention to Work grant. This grant is part of the stimulus funds that are coming to Maine to address obesity prevention. Currently Let's Go! and Healthy Portland are working together to finalize our plans, but these funds will allow us to build upon both our school and childcare work.
